RIVERS ALIVE (October each year)
Organized by the City of Savannah Environmental Affairs Office, the University of Georgia (UGA) Marine Extension Service, and the MPC, the annual event coordinates volunteers from all over Chatham County and the municipalities to collect thousands of pounds of debris from area rivers. In the 2004 event, both the Herb River and Hayner’s Creek in the Ogeechee watershed were the focus with approximately 60 volunteers collecting over 3,500 pounds of rubbish.
These events are traditionally advertised on the City’s Government Channel, fliers sent out the neighborhood associations in the area, a press release sent to all media providers, and posters placed around the City.
